Manchmal habe ich das Gef\u00fchl, eine klare Aussage machen zu m\u00fcssen, sodass auch alle verstehen k\u00f6nnen: Wir sind jetzt in Kioto. <\/p>\n
Der preisbewusste Reisende achtet stets auf sein Budget. Sparf\u00fcchse, wie wir es sind, werden dabei st\u00e4ndig auf die Probe gestellt. Das hatte sich schon in Tokio bew\u00e4hrt. Wenn das Zimmer f\u00fcr eine Person schon zu klein ist, denken wir nicht lange nach und sagen: Wir nehmen es zu zweit!<\/p>\n
Dass es in Kioto noch dreckiger und dementsprechend g\u00fcnstiger ginge, war aber auch von uns nicht abzusehen. Vorher noch ein kurzer Abstecher ins Goethe-Institut, wo ich offen zugab, dass ich darauf bestehe, in die hiesige K\u00fcnstlerresidenz einziehen zu sollen, denn Eines war mir mittlerweile glasklar: Wir sind f\u00fchlende K\u00fcnstler mit einem kontempor\u00e4ren Internetblog. Eine entsprechende Residenz w\u00e4re mehr als angemessen und ist l\u00e4ngst \u00fcberf\u00e4llig.<\/p>\n
Nun gut, die Wirklichkeit ist dann doch eine andere, aber nicht zwangsl\u00e4ufig weniger sch\u00f6n. Dieses Studentenwohnheim sieht schon von au\u00dfen nicht gut aus. Der Campus steht im kompletten Gegensatz zum Rest von Japan. Ger\u00fcmpel liegt quer \u00fcber dem Rasen verteilt. Aus einem der Geb\u00e4ude dringt klassische Musik. Das Haupthaus ein Moloch an jungen Studenten: angehende Musiker, Anw\u00e4lte und Wissenschaftler. <\/p>\n
Zwischen Vorlesungen und versifften Decken, liegen sie tagaus, tagein. Oder spielen Retro-Videospiele, Mahjong oder Poker. Die Lethargie ist im ganzen Haus zu sp\u00fcren. Zukunfts\u00e4ngste paaren sich mit essentiellen Bed\u00fcrfnissen. Dazu dieses Schlafwetter, billiger Alkohol und der Reiz des Gl\u00fccksspiels. F\u00fcr eine Woche Aufenthalt ist man als Au\u00dfenstehender mit 200 Yen (ca. zwei Euro) dabei. Die Alteingesessenen kommen auf 2500 Yen im Monat! Unschlagbar. \u00dcberhaupt ist dieser Ort in vielerlei Hinsicht einzigartig. Kreative Energie auf engstem Raum zusammengepfercht, ein Hort von Philosophen und Lebensk\u00fcnstlern. Der N\u00e4hrboden vielversprechender Karrieren im japanischen Einheitsbrei.<\/p>\n
Wie kann man das Gef\u00fchl des Reisens beschreiben? Es wird sicherlich oft von Unsicherheit begeleitet. Aber es sind genau diese unerwarteten Situationen und Umst\u00e4nde, die es so lohnenswert machen.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I\u2019ve got the feeling I need to make a clear statement, so everyone could understand: We are in Kyoto now.<\/p>\n
The price-conscious traveller keeps his budget in mind at all times. Penny pinchers like us are constantly tested in that respect. This had already proven of value in Tokyo. When the room is actually too small for one person, we do not think long and say: We take it for two.<\/p>\n
We couldn\u2019t foresee, though, that in Kyoto it would be even dirtier and to that effect cheaper. Before that, a short side trip to the Goethe Institute where I frankly admitted that I insist on being invited to live in the residence for artists because one thing was crystal clear to me: We are feeling artists with a contemporary internet blog. A corresponding residence would be more than appropriate and is long overdue.<\/p>\n
Well, reality is somewhat different, however not necessarily less nice. This dormitory doesn\u2019t even make a good impression from the outside. The campus stands in complete contrast to the rest of Japan. Junk is lying across the lawn. Classical music is coming out of one of the buildings. The main building is a moloch of young students: budding musicians, lawyers and scientists. <\/p>\n
Between lectures and filthy blankets, they lie day in, day out. Or play retro video games, mahjong or poker. You can feel the lethargy throughout the house. Anxiety about the future mixes up with essential needs. On top of that, sleeping weather, cheap alcohol and the attraction of gambling. For a week\u2019s stay, outsiders pay 200 yen. Long-time residents pay 2,500 yen per month. Unbeatable. This place is peculiar in many ways. Creative energy crowded in tightest space, a shelter for philosophers and hedonists. The nurturing ground of promising careers in the Japanese pabulum. <\/p>\n
How can one describe the feeling of travelling? It surely is often accompanied by insecurity. But it\u2019s exactly these unexpected situations and conditions that make it so rewarding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
