If I could make it here, I could make it anywhere. That’s what I say at least. My Ghetto Gospel.

You seem to have no choice but call it a stroke of fate, the fact that we’re living in this part of Tokyo. Accessible with the blue line, south of the canal: Kamata!

The former yakuza stronghold is a lovely place. When you get off at the station, you don’t realise it right away. At the building vis-à-vis, the penguindonkey is climbing up the wall. A short, brightly illuminated street with crooked advertising panels tries to create the impression of a vibrant metropolis.

But all this leaves me cold, and so I’m passing by the pachinko halls almost indifferently, from where you can hear booming noise till the late evening. In the 100-Yen-Shop, someone is asking me in Japanese where I’m originally from. I answer in Japanese and am not sure whether it’s because of the alcohol or whether I have really learned something.

Then I’m back in my Kamata. City idyll in small format. The next morning I open the sliding door in our room and hang my towel on the line outside. An old woman in the opposite house opens the door as well. We look at each other questioningly. As, in this very moment, a car is stopping at the street and an awkwardly and at the same time obtrusive voice is announcing something, I close the door and think:

If I could make it here, I could make it anywhere. That’s what I say at least.
